In Focus: The University of Makati

Welcome to the latest section of this blog, the In Focus section. I will feature here places and things about my city. For my very first feature article, I will give you a glimpse of my beloved Alma Mater – the University of Makati (formerly Pamantasan ng Makati).

Brief History

The University of Makati is an LGU-fully funded public university originally established in 1972 as the Makati Polytechnic Community College. In response to the growing demands for more curricular program offerings, the Polytechnic Community College was elevated to the status of a full-blown college and renamed Makati College in 1987 A merger with the former Fort Andres Bonifacio College on January 10, 1990 paved the way for the transformation of the college into a university. By virtue of Municipal Ordinance No. 433, Pamantasan ng Makati became a chartered university of Makati City on December 19, 1991 under the administration of Mayor Jejomar C. Binay. On August 27, 2002, City Ordinance 2002-111 has been approved amending City Ordinance No. 99-443 revising the Pamantasan ng Makati Charter so as to change the offcial name of Pamantasan ng Makati to University of Makati subject to all laws and existing legal regulations.

Makati Hosted the City-to-City Sharing on Disaster Risk Reduction

I just came from the culminating activity of the  World Bank-funded Global  Facility for Disaster Risk Reduction (GFDRR) City-to-City Sharing Initiative (C2CSI) for Disaster Risk Reduction hosted by Makati. Delegates from Quito, Ecuador and Kathmandu, Nepal have attended from April 23 to 27.

Makati Mayor Jejomar Erwin S. Binay said he was very much satisfied with the results of the first two study visits in Quito and Kathmandu attended by key officials, urban planners and disaster management experts of the city, with the outputs exceeding the projected expectations (Source: Makati City Portal).

A residency training was conducted  from April 16 to 20 wherein two delegates from Quito and two from Kathmandu learned about swiftwater rescue and training, hazardous materials rescue and decontamination, relocation and resettlement sites of Makati, redevelopment initiatives in the Central Business District, and MRSURP linear park construction beside a creek at Barangay Rizal.

The visiting cities shared their experiences in the C2C and committed to extend the partnership towards disaster risk reduction and climate change adaptation.  Likewise, the City Government of Makati extended its warmest gratitude to all the delegates and hoped that they enjoyed their stay in the city throughout the duration of the study visit.

Get Started in Sports with Milo Sports Clinic

MILO Heats up the Summer with Sports Programs for Future Young Filipino Achievers

Here’s another great activity for kids this summer!  MILO once again makes summer the perfect time for active play with the MILO Summer Sports Clinics. With its goal to make children into champions, MILO ensures that the participants of its trusted sports programs not only get the training they need to become future world-class athletes but also the necessary values that they would need to succeed in life such as determination, commitment and teamwork.

Beginning April until the end of May, MILO will be opening its sports clinics in over 20 cities all over the Philippines.  Kids ages 7 years old – 16 years old have 10 different sports to choose from:

  1. Badminton
  2. Chess
  3. Football
  4. Gymnastics
  5. Karatedo
  6. Swimming
  7. Table tennis
  8. Taekwondo
  9. Tennis
  10. Volleyball

Every day, for 2 – 3 hours, each child will be enjoying their summer playing the sport that they love and learning to be the best person they can be.

MILO goes beyond our role to develop a child’s physical growth,” said MILO Sports Executive Andrew Neri. “Instead, our sports clinics combine sports excellence with character-forming values that will hopefully lead to the maturity of well-rounded young adults.

To improve on the quality of the MILO Summer Sports Clinics, MILO has centralized the locations to ensure that more children will have access to the best coaches and the most effective training methods for a wide range of sports.

For moms and dads who think children should remain busy and active over the summer vacation, getting children involved in sports would be a more enjoyable and productive alternative to hours of watching TV or playing computer and video games. Summer sports activities are an excellent cure for the summer slack, says Melanie Nicolas, corporate executive and mother of two. I won’t have to worry about my children becoming overweight from lack of exercise, or growing bored from not having anything challenging to do.

Parents who believe in giving their children the opportunity to learn new skills and over the summer can rest assured knowing that MILO Sports Clinics have a more systematic training regimen that are better catered to improving individual skills and sharpen values like discipline, fair play, self – control, and honesty.

Visit http://www.milo.com.ph or call (02) 353-5090, (02) 966-6333, and (0917) 589-9880 to register for any of the sports clinics this summer of 2012.
